Send a letter to your New Jersey representative

Dear ____________,

The availiability of abortions in New Jersey is overwhelmingly large and needs to be addressed. It is giving women fewer options besides abortion and is encouraging many to terminate pregnancies and not seek out alternative options.

A proposed a solution to lower the overwhelming amount of abortions performed in New Jersey has been created as part of Project Citizen. In the process, significant research and analysis of statistics and data regarding abortions in New Jersey was done.

The availability of abortion clinics is too abundant, while alternative options such as increased birth control and care for pregnant women is inadequate in comparison. As one of only eleven US states, New Jersey allows females under the age of eighteen to make decisions about abortion without parental consent, which seems irresponsible and potentially dangerous. Since no waiting periods are mandated, the chances of a woman reversing her decision to abort her child decrease dramatically.

The root of the problem can be traced back to a lack of proper sexual education, thus creating confusion and uncertainty in the minds of young, sexually active people. This uncertainty leads to poor decision making and unwanted pregnancies. New Jersey can allot money for grants dedicated to improving sexual education, which schools can apply for. This money will be obtained from funds originally allocated for abortions, and be used to halt unwanted pregnancies from occurring by keeping young New Jersey citizens informed about their bodies and sexual activity.

Not only with this reallocation of funds occur, but a ban will be put on third-trimester abortions. These abortions have been found to put both the child and the mother at great risk. In addition, increased support for childcare services, prenatal services, adoption agencies, and 24 hour waiting periods will be implemented. Lastly, an end will be put to partial births, as well as the ability for women under eighteen to have an abortion without parental consent.

Hopefully, these points have opened your eyes to the true issue: an overwhelming abundance of abortions that could be avoided with proper alternatives implemented. Life is at the forefront of the minds, as is respect for a woman’s body and her decisions about it. A woman's right to choose is imperative, however, the rights of an unborn child are just as important as that of the mother. This describes why advocation for stricter laws regarding abortion is needed. This will allow women to stop unwanted pregnancies before they can begin, to be fully informed about their options (not solely abortion), and protect their bodies, and those of the tiny humans that reside within them.

Thank you for your time, and I truly hope that this has made an impact.

Sincerely,

           State of New Jersey

                                     Abortion Policy Reform Bill

Senate Sponsor:                                                             Assembly Sponsor:

Delegation:

  1. AN ACT to pass stricter abortion legislation in the State of New Jersey

  2. Be it enacted by the students of Project Citizen that laws be initiated which establish stricter abortion laws within the state of New Jersey. These include laws prohibiting abortions after the third trimester (specifically partial-birth abortions), requiring parental consent for persons under the age of 18 who are looking to have an abortion, requiring a 24 hour waiting period for women considering abortion, and reducing the amount of state funds which go towards abortion costs.

  3. Section I: These laws will be put into effect by a time deemed appropriate by legislators and all health care facilities must comply to the laws by that time.

  4. Section II: State funds previously allocated for abortion costs will be directed towards sexual education and information about adoption facilities and options other than abortion.

  5. Effective Date: Laws regarding abortion will be put into effect in January 2020, funds will slowly begin allocation towards other costs as soon as bill is approved.

  6. Statement of Intent: The intent of this bill is to improve sexual education and reducing the need for abortion within the state of New Jersey. Also by limiting abortions to before the third trimester, the bill reduces health risks for women considering abortion.

  7. Financial Statement: No extra finances are needed to put this bill into effect, just reallocation of funds previously labeled for abortion purposes.
