Our Solution

The solution best fit for New Jersey would be to propose a bill decreasing the budget money allotted for abortion services and encouraging the available of adoption agencies. Instead, the state would utilize this money to improve sexual education in schools and help provide for women who are currently pregnant or raising a child. The bill would prohibit abortions after the third trimester, specifically partial birth abortions, as well as require permission from at least one parent for minors under the age of 18. The bill will also require a waiting period of 24 hours for women considering an abortion. Some of the budget money removed from abortion services will be used to provide for counseling services for women wishing to obtain an abortion. Initiative ballots can be put in place to gauge the public opinion on the proposed policy change. Once this new bill is passed, health care facilities will be changed to comply with the laws. The government will then allot money for improved sexual education through grants which schools can apply for.

What Would This Solution Do?

  • Decrease abortion funding and use it instead toward education and child support and counceling

  • Requiring parent cosent for all minors who want to have an abortion

  • Prevent any partial births from happening after the third trimester

  • Require a 24 hour wait period before allowing an abortion

Pros

  • Limits the amount of abortions throughout NJ

  • Many different proposed restrictions- allows for flexibility and a greater probability that our solution will be implemented

  • Policy makers can pass/veto/edit the initial bill through the legislative process

  • Not limited to a yes or no on a single restriction

  • Promotes prevention of abortions- sexual education in schools will lower teen pregnancies

  • Increases availability of adoption agencies and alternative methods to allow less abortions and more children to receive fulfilling lives

  • Informs more citizens about abortions at a young age so they can make more educated decisions

Cons

  • In a liberal state, it is less likely a bill restricting abortion will receive full support the state legislation

  • Sexual education programs might seem taboo- might be hard for parents to accept and difficult to teach to high school students

  • No restrictions currently implemented-less likely to pass one of the many restrictions in this bill
